Salomon Orchestra
Thursday 23rd March 2006, St. James's Church,Piccadilly
In the Barbarians' Camp, 2nd Duino Elegy for Baritone and Orchestra
The Salomon Orchestra, Adrian Brown (conductor), David Greiner (baritone)
The orchestra gave 2 of my pieces at a concert in 2003 and I pleased that they have agreed to perform 2 more.
This time they were conducted by Adrian Brown and joined by German baritone David Greiner.
The programme included The Barbarian's Camp, a piece written after reading one of Helen Waddell's translations from Latin;
a poem in which the poet laments that he can no longer write poetry because he is disturbed by the chaos and unfocused
enthusiasm of the smelly barbarians. The piece depicts the chaos of the barbarian camp in a poly-rhythmical opening,
the conclusion of the piece incorporates my fanfare, The Barbarians are Coming which was written for the Philharmonia Brass
Ensemble to perform at the Chelsea Festival in 2001. The other piece of mine in the programme was a setting of Rilke's
Second Duino Elegy for baritone and orchestra; the singer was the German baritone David Greiner, someone who has
performed much of my work. The idea for the work germinated in the late 1990's when I wished to write piece for David
which set his native German.

This sets excerpts from Archbishop Cranmer's famous speech from the scaffold just before he was burned for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary. The programme also included a number of motets setting Cranmer's own words,
plus a selection of contrasting motets (in English and Latin) from the reigns of Edward 6th and Mary 1st. The concert was performed by a new professional vocal ensemble, Eight:Fifteen Vocal Ensemble, and featured the cello playing of Jonathan Cottle. Click here for full details.
