Kleine Variationen-Form
Grainger's Kleine Variationen-Form was inspired by a section in the story 'Thrond' by the Norwegian writer Bjornstjerne Bjornson (1832-1910). The section relates the story of a magical winter's night near to Christmas when the character Blessom is far away from his village and looks eagerly into the windows of houses where he sees the joyful celebrations of the occupants. He wishes he could be back home in time for Christmas but it is impossible, that is until a mysterious stranger appears and offers him a ride in his sleigh.

Blessom is at first suspicious but finally accepts the ride and too his amazement he finds himself flying though the air and soon sees his home village in the distance down below. The sleigh eventually descends and Blessom alights from it to be told by the sleigh driver not to look around. Being curious, he eventually turns round only to see the sleigh disappearing into the mountain with a thunderous noise.

The music is semi-programmatic and relates mainly to the sleigh ride. The piece is Grainger's first attempt at variation form that was later to flower in such works as 'Green Bushes'. The score was presented to Grainger's mother for Christmas 1898.
